Unbreakable Brings Backstreet Back

posted by Kay in The Press Archives

11/28/07 - For those of us re-living our childhood and still engrossed in the world of pretty boys and bubblegum pop music, this year’s Christmas came early. Oct. 30 marked the release of the Backstreet Boys sixth studio album, Unbreakable.

These five boys have brought us soothing harmonies and crisp dance moves for 13 years now. True fans have stuck through rehab, an embarrassing reality show, marriages and children. Fans have also recently had to come to terms with the band’s loss of a member.

But we’ve been here all along. We’ve known the dance moves to “Everybody,” we’ve serenaded someone with “I Want it That Way,” and we’ve all shed a tear over “The Perfect Fan.”

Now the Backstreet Boys that remain, A.J. McLean (29), Brian Littrell (32), Howie Dorough (34) and Nick Carter (27) have matured and brought us one of their best compilations yet. Get ready, because once again, Backstreet’s back…all right.

Unbreakable returns to Backstreet’s roots, reviving the pop sounds of the ’90s that put the band on the radar. As on their first album, they charm us with their ability to harmonize. Unbreakable opened at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

The first single off the album, “Inconsolable” is led by youngest, and my personal favorite member, Carter. It is sure to be a solid radio hit through 2007.

BSB secures their name by adding heartfelt ballads that will make your knees weak and have you singing for years. “Unsuspecting Sunday Afternoon” and “Helpless When She Smiles” have deep lyrics that reflect the maturing lives of men in their late 20s and early 30s.

Don’t think that Backstreet’s gone all old people on us though; they remain youthful in their upbeat dance songs like “Panic” and “Everything but Mine.” These songs could easily hold their own in Hollywood’s hottest clubs.

“Treat Me Right” is one of the most innovative songs on the album written by the band’s own McLean, and rival *NSYNC-er JC Chasez. Although BSB fans used to despise those of *NSYNC, I think it’s safe to say that we won and that we shouldn’t shun Chasez. We knew it was only a matter of time before they would be “bye - bye - bye.”

Unbreakable is basically the best album since 2000’s Millennium, which broke the record for sales in its first week and was nominated for five Grammy’s. Unbreakable, along with Nick Carter’s 44 lb. weight loss is exactly what we need to pep us up for a classic BSB world tour!

That’s right folks, break out those old concert T-shirts, the BSB jet (you know the one I mean, it sports all of their pictures) is being fueled up and ready for takeoff. BSB kicks off its fifth world tour in February starting in Tokyo. The band should be in the United States by late 2008.

There you have it. You’re officially ready to sing and dance with your favorite Hollywood hunk (even it was Howie) and for those of you who managed to escape a boy band phase in your life, it’s never too late! I invite you to indulge in Unbreakable.

Brian Littrell Comes Home For Christmas

RCOPLEY@ HERALD-LEADER.COM

Brian Littrell’s last two Lexington concerts were in Rupp Arena with a little act you might have heard of, the Backstreet Boys.

The way his mother, Jackie Littrell, sees it, being part of the chart-topping act has been a “steppingstone” to what he was doing last night: Singing contemporary Christian songs.

“It’s wonderful, it’s a dream come true,” the proud mother said right before her son’s concert at her church, Immanuel Baptist. “He’ll always be a Backstreet Boy, but the Lord is his heart.”

Littrell took a big step into the gospel market last year with the release of his solo debut, Welcome Home, an overtly Christian album reflective of artists he grew up listening to, such as Sandi Patty and Michael W. Smith.

Last night, he brought the solo act home for the first time.

Littrell took the stage at Immanuel Baptist, walking through the same door his parents, Jackie and Harold Littrell, use when they enter the sanctuary to sing with the church’s choir.

And mom and dad got the thrill of “backing up my son,” as Harold put it, singing two numbers with Littrell as part of that choir.

For You Keep Giving Me, Harold was behind Brian, giving the audience a little idea of where his famous son’s showmanship came from. Jackie was in front of him, blushing as Brian sang a few lines about giving her a hard time growing up.

Later in the concert, Littrell’s 5-year-old son Baylee sat on his lap, playing with a stuffed beagle and snuggling up to his dad, who sang I’ll Be Home for Christmas.

That’s a big promise from a man who is busy with two international music careers. The past month, he’s been busy promoting the Backstreet Boys, new album, Unbreakable, including a trip to Europe over Thanksgiving week.

There were seven Europeans in the audience who came over from Hanover, Germany, to see Littrell’s solo show and then follow him to Arlington, Va., where the Backstreet Boys are performing tonight.

“We wanted to come see them on our vacation,” said Chrissy Schulz, part of the group. Compared to Germany, she said, “It’s a lot more relaxing here. In Germany, we would have had to camp out for an event like this.”

Last night’s concert attracted around 1,200 people, according to Tammy Flora, who directed the fund-raiser for Central Baptist Hospital.

Among them were Sheila Drake and Whitney Flora, both 23 and graduates of Littrell’s alma mater, Tates Creek High School.

“He’s definitely one of our claims to fame,” Flora said.

Julie Dillion, a language-arts teacher at Southern Middle School, where the singer attended, recalled one of her students shaking once when she realized she’d been issued Littrell’s old spelling book.

For his part, Littrell shared a lot of memories of growing up in Lexington during the concert, which mixed his solo material with Christmas songs, all accompanied by his four-piece band. He betrayed some nervousness from playing for the hometown crowd in his first few numbers. But later, he was soaring through songs such as the contemporary Christmas classic, Mary Did You Know?

“Maybe we can do this again next year,” Littrell said to cheers. “Maybe, I’ll bring some friends.”

Then he sang, “Oh my God, we’re back again,” from the BSB hit, Everybody (Backstreet’s Back). “See,” he said, “We’ve always been singing about God.”

Backstreet Boys Taking Gambling Bus To Las Vegas

posted by Kay in The Press Archives

Former BACKSTREET BOYS star KEVIN RICHARDSON gave his ex-bandmate HOWIE DOROUGH a night to remember as the singer celebrated his bachelor party - he hired a bus to take revellers to Las Vegas. Richardson quit the group last year (06) but proved there are no hard feelings when he joined groom-to-be Dorough and A.J. McLean on the road on 16 November (07). According to American magazine In Touch Weekly, the pop trio and their guests hopped on board a rented bus in Los Angeles and gambled their way to Sin City. The party carried on once the bus hit Las Vegas - at hotspot Tao. Dorough will wed longtime sweetheart Leigh Boniello in Orland, Florida next month (Dec07).

Old-School Brian Image (1989)

posted by Kay in The Press Archives

Thanks to BriansBabyDuck at LD :

I was searching photos on Flickr and came across this picture of Brian @ a piano.

mURI_temp_1e5ee536.jpg

I attended Southern Junior High and Tates Creek High School in Lexington, Kentucky from 1987 to 1993 and knew Brian Littrell from church and our chorus classes long before he eventually became better known for his work with the Back Street Boys. It amuses me because you never expect the normal people in your life will one day become world famous.

This picture was taken sometime in 1989 when I was accompanying the chorus on piano to Whitney Houston’s song “One Moment in Time” and because I was a little clumsy in turning the music pages myself Brian helped out by turning the pages for me.

Cosmo Interview

posted by Kay in The Press Archives

The boy band’s back with a new CD, Unbreakable (out October 30). Here, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and AJ McLean answer five questions just for you!

THERE’S ONLY FOUR OF YOU NOW! WHERE’S KEVIN RICHARDSON?

Howie: “Kevin actually came to us right before we started recording over a year and a half ago. He said that in his heart, he just wasn’t feeling like going forward with making another record. His wife had a baby and he wanted to have that time to properly be there for the early years. And we know that going into a recording studio is pretty much two years of your life you’re giving up, so we totally understood and gave him our blessing. There are no hard feelings at all.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON THE SONG “TREAT ME RIGHT” WITH JC CHASEZ, WHO WAS IN ‘N SYNC?

AJ: “Writing with JC was an interesting process, obviously because he’s coming from another vocal group like us. He understands the harmonies, the melodies, and what we do as a unit. There was never any animosity between us and ‘N Sync that everyone put on us. It was fun to have him in the studio with the four of us. And we told him, ‘Hey, if you want to come out for a couple shows, come on out!’”

HAVE YOUR OWN VOICES CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

Nick: “I’m going through my third puberty. No, actually, I feel like I’ve gotten better. I don’t feel like I sound like a Chipmunk anymore. I’m happy with where I’m headed vocally and think what I can contribute is a lot better.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS YOU ADMIRE RIGHT NOW?

Brian: “I’ve always been a big Norah Jones fan. That’s what I have in my iPod and my car right now.”
AJ: “Mika. When I heard the single, I was like, I don’t know who this guy is, but he sounds like Freddie Mercury! And I’ve been getting into country as of late. I’m a big Rascal Flatts fan, and even Carrie Underwood.”
Howie: “Some of my favorite artists are coming back with second albums, like Maroon 5, James Blunt, and I’m glad to see Matchbox Twenty back together!”
Nick: “I really like Lloyd and Kanye West!”

KNOWING WHAT YOU DO TODAY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE BACKSTREET BOYS 10 YEARS AGO?

Nick: “To have fun and enjoy it! It’s like Forrest Gump said, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates.’ Your career is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re going to get. But everything you get is going to teach you something along the way and make you the person you are today. That’s the exciting part — it’s an adventure in itself. It’s like we didn’t know what the New World was, and Christopher Columbus decided to come over and find out!”
